Week 7: NFL Offseason WAY-Too-Early Free-Agency Theories and Predictions

Welcome back! It’s already week number seven of my weekly blog posts, and I already miss football. On the plus side, baseball season is right around the corner, but until then, we got to talk about the NFL offseason before it really kicks into full gear.

Let’s start this week off by discussing two former Kansas City Chiefs offensive tackles: Mitchell Schwartz and Eric Fisher. Arguably the main reason KC was pummeled in the Super Bowl was the absence of these two; a month later and they’re gone. KC saves 17 million dollars in cap by shipping them out the door.

Now that the two tackles are officially on the market, lets make some predictions on where they might end up. Both tackles could be interchangeable for any team, although Schwartz is a bit more expensive and a bit better.

The first team I like here is the Seattle Seahawks. Seattle is in dire need of offensive line help and really needs an offensive tackle. With about 21 Million dollars in cap room, they’ll be looking to protect Russel Wilson (assuming they keep him).

Another player bound to get shipped is Texans’ quarterback Deshaun Watson. Watson has explicitly stated that he wants nothing to do with the Houston organization as a whole and wants out asap.

Enter two teams: the Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers. Both teams seem to be in some sort of quarterback need as both starting qbs for each team underperformed in 2020. Watson would be a huge upgrade for either team, but it means selling the farm. Denver has more money available to pay Watson, but Carolina arguably has more essential trade pieces.

Ultimately, I think Watson goes to wherever offers the most money and trade capital.

The final dilemma I would like to talk about is the interesting situation in Seattle regarding quarterback, Russel Wilson. Although he has yet to request a trade formally, Wilson has expressed displeasure in Seattle.

If Wilson was to be shipped, I believe the Chicago Bears have the best chance at him, if they don’t fully commit to Mitch Trubisky. The Bears have cap room, plus plenty of trade capital, so this trade would have some merit to it.

These would be my offseason initial predictions. If anything else comes up, a part two may be in order!
